What It's Like
If you never have had a professional massage, here's what you can expect.
First of all, you will be treated with respect, care, and dignity.
To afford access to your muscles, it's customary for clients to disrobe to their level of comfort. For some, this may mean removing all their clothes. Others choose to keep their underwear on. Disrobing is done while the therapist is out of the room.
You will be draped the entire time under a sheet. Only areas actively being worked on are undraped. Your sense of safety is key to a good therapeutic massage, where you can let go.
Typically, before a massage, I will spend time talking with you about your medical history, your needs and expectations for the service. I'll want to know if you prefer light, medium or heavy pressure, places you may want me to avoid, and areas that need particular attention. It is supremely helpful that you let me know if pressure is too hard, or too light, or strokes are too fast or too slow. I want to get it just right for you. You need not suffer in silence or get off the table at the end not receiving the massage you hoped for.
Generally, massages are given in silence with quiet music playing. However, some people like to talk during a massage. Both are fine, but quiet can let you relax more deeply.
During the massage your job is to breathe, receive, and let go.
At the end, you will likely feel very relaxed and refreshed. Before we finish, I am going to ask you to discern what may feel different for you: physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Being able to put words to this can help reinforce for yourself what you happened for you. This is also part of the massage.
